KHCF Launches Awareness Campaign on World No Tobacco Day

Amman, May 2025 — The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) has launched an awareness campaign titled “Don’t Be Deceived – It’s All Disease, All Poison, All Addiction” to highlight the risks of smoking and nicotine addiction across all its forms and concentrations. The campaign draws attention to the fact that nicotine is directly linked to 16 types of cancer and is a leading cause of lung cancer, which is the second leading cause of death after heart disease.

Commenting on the campaign, Mrs. Nisreen Qatamish, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF), stated: “We urgently need collective action to combat the widespread availability and social acceptance of tobacco products. This reality compels us to intensify our public campaigns and field outreach across diverse communities, raising awareness about the physical, mental, social, and economic harms of tobacco use.”

She added: “Enforcing public smoking bans is a shared responsibility, requiring the cooperation of educational, healthcare, and media institutions alike to work together toward a smoke-free environment.”

Recent data reveals alarming high smoking rates in Jordan among youth: 59% for those aged 25–34, 50% for ages 18–24, and 31% for ages 15–17. Moreover, 38.6% of smokers began using tobacco before the age of 18, negatively impacting brain development, concentration, emotional stability, and academic performance during childhood and adolescence.
