Wilms' Tumor

Wilms’ tumor is a rare cancer of the kidneys. It often appears in one kidney. About 90% of childhood kidney cancers are Wilms’ tumors.

 

Causes of Wilms’ tumor

Certain genetic conditions and birth defects can increase the risk of developing Wilms tumor. Parents should consult a doctor if their child is born with a genetic condition. The child should also be screened regularly.

 

Symptoms of Wilms’ tumor

Children with Wilms’ tumor might experience some of the following symptoms (although they could be indicative of other conditions):

  • Swelling or pain in the abdomen
  • A lump in the abdomen
  • Blood in the urine
  • Fever

 

Diagnosis of Wilms’ tumor

  • Ultrasounds
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan

 

Treatment of Wilms’ tumor at KHC

A treatment plan is determined based on how much the cancer has spread throughout the body. Standard treatment is surgery followed by chemotherapy. Radiotherapy may be needed depending on the stage of cancer.
