Mouth Cancer

What is mouth cancer?
Mouth cancer is the abnormal or incontrollable division of mouth cells, leading to the formation of tumors.

Types of mouth cancer
Mouth cancer can affect any of the following:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Lower mouth
  • Tongue
  • Gums
  • Oral bone
  • Pharynx
  • Rear molar area
  • Palate

Symptoms

  • Incurable dental extraction location within the mouth
  • Incurable sore on the lip or in the mouth
  • A tumor on the lip, mouth, or larynx
  • White or red spots on gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth
  • Abnormal bleeding, pain, or numbness in the mouth
  • Wounds or infections not healing
  • Feeling that something is stuck in the throat
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Swelling in the jaw causing difficulty in dental alignment
  • An unexplainable change in voice
  • An unexplainable ear pain
  • These symptoms may appear as a result of less serious medical conditions, you should visit the doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

Risk factors that increase the risk of developing oral cancer

  • Smoking
  • Excessive Alcohol consumption
  • Over-exposure of the lips to the sun
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
  • Weak immunity
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Tooth loss

Early Detection

  • Mouth cancer is diagnosed through simple procedures, the most important of which are regular and comprehensive medical examinations of the mouth which detect precancerous conditions and early stage cancer.
  • Although mouth cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world, early detection in the first and second stages increases the chances of a cure by 70%.

Diagnosis
If tumors or ulcers in the mouth or any of the unexplained symptoms persist for more than two weeks, a sample should be taken for laboratory examination, after which an accurate diagnosis can be made.

Treatment
Mouth cancer treatment includes:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy

Prevention

  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid overexposure to the sun and use sunscreen
  • Regularly visit the dentist
