Osteosarcoma in Children

Osteosarcoma is a rare form of cancer originating in the bone. It is more common in children and young adults, mainly affecting those between the ages of 10 and 25.

Causes of osteosarcoma

The exact cause of osteosarcoma is unknown, however, certain genetic mutations and conditions may increase the risk of developing it. Past exposure to radiotherapy or anticancer drugs such as alkylating agents can increase the risk as well.

Symptoms of osteosarcoma

  • Pain and swelling in or around a bone
  • Limited movement
  • Unexplained bone breakage

Diagnosis of osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is mainly diagnosed by taking an x-ray of the bone and performing a biopsy. Doctors may also take a CT or MRI scan of the chest to rule out the presence of lung metastasis.

Treatment of osteosarcoma at KHCC

Chemotherapy is the standard treatment for this cancer. After chemotherapy, surgery is usually performed to remove the tumor. Doctors at KHCC ensure limb salvage by removing the tumor without having to amputate the affected limb. In cases of lung metastasis, surgery may be needed to remove the affected lung lesions.

Osteosarcoma does not respond to radiotherapy, and it is only used for pain relief.
