Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty involving the application of radioactive substances in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Specialists at KHCC use safe, painless, and cost-effective techniques to scan the body and treat oncologic diseases. Approximately 3,500 nuclear medicine scans and therapeutic procedures are performed every year for KHCC patients. The high quality of these scans enables oncologists to stage and re-stage patients accurately, evaluate response, planning radiotherapy treatment and deliver high doses of targeted radionuclide treatment in some types of cancer (e.g. differentiated thyroid cancer treated with radioactive iodine).
 
In its efforts to deliver and implement its services according to the highest standards, the Nuclear Medicine Department has earned certification from various local and international bodies. As part of KHCC, it is certified from JCI (Joint Commission International). It is also nationally accredited. Moreover, the department is licensed by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) for the possession and use of radioactive materials for staff, machines and location.
 
Nuclear medicine imaging is unique, because it provides doctors with information about both structure and function. It is a way to gather medical information that would otherwise be unavailable, require surgery, or necessitate more expensive diagnostic tests. Nuclear medicine imaging procedures often identify abnormalities very early in the progress of a disease—long before many medical problems are apparent with other diagnostic tests.
 
Our expertise and scope of service:
We provide the following diagnostic and therapeutic services for both inpatients and outpatients:
PET & PET/CT
  • F18 FDG PET/CT scan mainly for oncology indications
  • Ga68 DOTATOC PET/CT for Neuroendocrine Tumors
Radionuclide therapy
  • Radioactive Iodine therapy for benign and malignant thyroid diseases.
  • Radionuclide therapy of bone pain as a palliative treatment for bone metastasis
  • Radioactive MIBG-I131 treatment for neuroblastoma and suprarenal masses.
  • We are planning to establish Lu177 DOTATAE treatment for Neuroendocrine Tumor in 2012.
Conventional Diagnostic Procedures
  • Static & Dynamic Conventional Isotopes  Scans by Gamma Camera ( More than 30 different procedures)
  • SPECT by Gamma Camera.
DEXA scan for assessment of Bone Mineral Density (diagnosis and follow up of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia)
 
Department Staff:
Physicians in the Nuclear Medicine Department are highly qualified and certified by the Jordan Medical Council, the European Board of Nuclear Medicine, the Royal College of Radiologist, German PET/CT certification and the American Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology. Furthermore, our physicists and technicians are certified and well-trained.
