Mammograms

What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a type of x-ray used especially to detect any tumors or abnormalities in the breasts. Each breast is x-rayed in two views for complete analysis. You should always keep your old X-rays for future comparison.

How does it work?
Once you arrive to a mammogram appointment, you will be taken to a room where you will have to stand in front of an x-ray machine. Your breasts will be pressed flat between two plastic plates for a few minutes, while the x-ray takes an image. This might feel a little uncomfortable but it is necessary to get an accurate image of your inner breast tissue.

Is it harmful?
No, mammograms use very small doses of radiation so your risk of radiation exposure is very low.

Why are mammograms so important?
Mammograms are the most efficient screening method to detect early stage breast cancer. They can detect any tumors in the breasts long before you or a health professional can feel them. This is especially important as early-stage breast cancer has survival rates of up to 90%.

When should I get one?
  • Women over 40 years old should start taking mammograms once every two years; in addition to self-breast and clinical breast exams every year.
  • Women over 50 years old should take a mammogram once every year.
  • If you are at a high risk of breast cancer (for example if you have a family history of breast cancer) then it is best to consult your doctor as you will probably need to start taking mammograms earlier than the recommended age or more often.
