Nursing Services
Services:
The nursing staff, throughout KHCC, is fully trained to all required competencies for their units. KHCC Nurses are aware of emotional and psychological factors affecting patients with cancer and their families. To help facilitate smooth cooperation and administration of all treatment and procedure, our nurses treat each patient as an individual with distinctive needs. KHCC nursing professional practice model that describes our service approach, is considering patient and family as centered of care.
Our direct care nurses (DCN) provide our patients with full of care within the following services:
In-Patients Services:
1. Medical – Surgical Services:
Consist of five separate units with a 135 bed capacity (Main Medical-35 beds, Leukemia-17 beds, Main Surgical-23 beds, Palliative-12 beds, and VIP-14 beds) DCNs of the medical / surgical units are trained to all required competencies for their units, which include but not limited to:
· Administration of intensive chemotherapy
· Medication administration
· Pain management techniques
· Physical assessment
· Unit-based procedural competency
2. Intensive Care Service:
Consist of two separate intensive care units ICUs (Pediatric ICU and Adult ICU). DCNs of ICU are providing care for critically ill cancer patients utilizing modern technology. Nursing assignments reflect an emphasis on the management of patient acuity and psychological needs of recovery post surgery and those suffering from acute oncological complications. At KHCC ICU, one DCN taking care of one patient during each shift (1:1: ratio) which is better than what is been recommended per national and international recommendation to providing high quality of care (2:1).
ICU nurses are trained to be competent to all required competences, which include but not limited to:
· Central line management
· Cardiac monitoring
· Oxygen and respiratory therapy
· Pain management
3. Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) service:
The capacity of this unit is 15 beds. Nurses are aware of the importance of stressing patient and family education, to allow their understanding and cooperation of all procedures and treatments taking place during hospital stays, as well as post discharge. The BMT staff is trained to all required competences, which include but not limited to:
· Bone marrow aspirate biopsy
· Stem cell administration
· T.P.N administration
4. Pediatrics service:
The capacity of this unit is 34 beds. Nurses are aware of the importance of pediatric population’s growth and development as well as their special needs along with their families’ need, to allow their understanding and cooperation of all procedures and treatments taking place during hospital stays, as well as post discharge.
The Pediatrics nursing staff is trained to all required competences, which include but not limited to:
· Physical assessment (age specific assessment)
5. Operating Room (OR):
Nursing staff takes turns in the scrubbing and circulating duties. A floater remains as a circulator in order to be available to service every room, where assistance is required. Surgical classification in practice includes:
· Gynecology
· Urology
· Ophthalmology
· E.N.T
· Laparoscopic surgery
· Head and Neck
· Neuro – surgery
· Thoracic surgery
· Vascular surgery
· Pediatric surgery
Outpatient services:
1. Pediatric Drop-in clinic (5 bed capacity) and Pediatric chemotherapy clinic (7 bed capacity) All are staffed by trained registered nurses and practical nurses.
2. Endoscopy (endoscopy, minor procedure bronchoscopy): All are staffed by trained registered nurses and technicians.
3. Ambulatory adult chemotherapy clinic – Building B: The infusion area is located where all out patients receive treatment. Nurses working in this area administer chemotherapy, immune therapy and transfusion support.
Sub-Specialized Nursing Services:
1. Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC): is an advanced form of nursing practice started at KHCC to improve care for patients with cancer. Several multidisciplinary programs are operated within the center and presence of CNCs is obvious in providing care, support and coordinates the care.
2. Pain management Nurses: although all nursing staff are been trained of how to manage patients’ pain, but sub-specialized nurses whom extensively trained on how to assess pain, train nurses, and coordinate pain management.
3. Vascular Access Device (VAD) nursing team: Specialized nurses, who have special training in how to deal with VAD, assess complications, providing VAD care, and access de-access them.
Nursing Special Programs:
1. Evidence Based – Resource Unit Nurses EB-RUNs: are group of nurse clinicians in each unit who is provided with all knowledge needed to take a leadership role in all aspects of evidence based practice (EBP). When nurses apply EBP in nursing care plan, a high quality of care for patient will be assured.

Nusrsing Quality Improvement
Quality is striving toward how much we are doing the right nursing task, at the right time, in the right way from the first time. At KHCC, there is a well established quality office that oversees all quality related issues at KHCC through their liaisons in the units. Nursing quality office has been established since January 2010. As nursing department considered the largest at KHCC; it is concerned about event report analysis and follow up, patient satisfaction, quality projects and nursing sensitive quality indicators establishment. Furthermore and in alignment with the magnet toward journey a nursing quality council has been established as part of shared governance structure. Providing safe and best practice to our beloved patients is our paramount; that led us to implement advance strategies in quality assurance, quality monitoring, and quality improvement in various ways to achieve our goals.
Quality Improvement is a formal approach to the analysis of performance and systematic efforts to improve it.Quality control is a process employed to ensure a certain level of quality in a product or service.
