Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy (or radiotherapy) is the medical use of ionizing radiation as part of cancer treatment to control malignant cells. Radiotherapy may be used for curative or adjuvant cancer treatment. Total body irradiation (TBI) is a radiotherapy technique used to prepare the body to receive a bone marrow transplant.
Radiation therapy is commonly applied to the tumor. The radiation fields may also include the draining lymph nodes if they are clinically or radiologically involved with tumor, or if there is thought to be a risk of sub-clinical malignant spread. It is necessary to include a margin of normal tissue around the tumor to allow for uncertainties in daily set-up and internal tumor motion. These uncertainties can be caused by internal movement (for example, respiration and bladder filling) and movement of external skin marks relative to the tumor position.
Staff
Our staff includes 5 full time radiation oncologists, 7 physicists, 18 technicians and a radiation protection officer.
We have an active residency program that is training residents from other Arab countries. Obviously, this is part of KHCC mission to advance cancer care in Jordan and the region.
