Gastroenterology

KHCC offers around-the-clock gastrointestinal consults to both adult and pediatric patients. Services are provided by a full-time American Board-Certified gastroenterologists.

We also oversee a comprehensive GI multi-modality clinic that includes a gastroenterologist, a medical oncologist, a surgeon and a radiation oncologist, providing full continuum of care to patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

What is an endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to assess the interior surfaces of gastrointestinal organs.  An instrument called an “endoscope” has a long tube with a light source and a lens that can capture images and may be used to take samples (biopsies) or remove small protrusions (polypectomy).  The tube can be advanced through the mouth to examine the stomach and duodenum or the lower GI tract to examine the colon.  The procedure is usually done under sedation so there is little discomfort, if any. Results may be given immediately after the procedure, but usually a few days are needed to fully study the samples collected during the procedure.

Endoscopy Suite

KHCC has a new state-of-the-art and fully equipped endoscopy suite where patients can undergo a full range of gastrointestinal procedures for screening and treatment purposes. It is one of the best facilities in the country.

The following procedures are done in our endoscopy unit:

    • Enteroscopy
    • Endoscopic Ultrasounds and endobronchial ultrasound with FNA capabilities.
    • Endobronchial tumor ablation.
    • ERCP with Biliary Biopsies and Stenting
    • Argon Plasma Coagulation for bleeding telengectasias and ablation of tumors.
    • Luminal Stenting: esophageal, pyloric, duodenal and colonic.
    • PEG tube insertion.

Why is our service unique?

  • At KHCC, 2 American board certified, full-time gastroenterologists cover the adult and pediatric services.  Our consultants are the only gastroenterologists in the kingdom who work solely with cancer patients.
  • Our endoscopy unit has all the needed instruments to effectively diagnose and treat patients of all ages, including: adult & pediatric gastroscopes, adult & pediatric colonoscopes, therapeutic duodenoscope and ERBE machine with argon plasma coagulation.
  • All pediatric procedures that require sedation are done under direct supervision of an anesthesiologist.  This should leave no room for errors or confusion while administering sedation during treatment and should secure the safety and comfort of our patients.
  • Moreover, specimens collected during procedures are immediately accessioned and processed to guarantee the quick availability of results.
