What is an endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to assess the interior surfaces of gastrointestinal organs. An instrument called an “endoscope” has a long tube with a light source and a lens that can capture images and may be used to take samples (biopsies) or remove small protrusions (polypectomy). The tube can be advanced through the mouth to examine the stomach and duodenum or the lower GI tract to examine the colon. The procedure is usually done under sedation so there is little discomfort, if any. Results may be given immediately after the procedure, but usually a few days are needed to fully study the samples collected during the procedure.
