Early Detection Program

As part of the overall mission of KHCC to provide state of the art cancer care to the people of Jordan and the surrounding areas, our program aims at increasing awareness of the general public about the importance of regular screening and early detection of cancer, in order to increase the rates of cases detected at the early stages of the disease, thus increasing the effectiveness of treatment and an overall improvement in the cure rates. At present, more than 70% of cases diagnosed are already in very advanced or late stages, where treatment options are limited and not very effective; hence, the outcomes are exceedingly poor.

It is our goal to reach out to and educate the Jordanian population in order to prevent unnecessary deaths as a result of ignorance. Our outreach program aims to spread the message of cancer awareness and the importance of screening as a means of saving lives via detecting cancers in their early stages. The program reaches out to various factions of the general public, through an active collaboration with private as well as public institutions, universities, women associations and various individual efforts.

Staff
Two full time physicians and a practical nurse cover the early detection clinic.  Our staff has long experience in cancer screening and early detection.  They are an excellent resource for our staff, patients and their families on the proper screening and early detection of cancer.  Furthermore, the director of the program participates in lectures presentation and workshops all over the Kingdom to educate the public about early diagnosis.

Services
Screening & Early Detection Clinic: first initiated in 1999, as two separate clinics for male and female screening. The majority of patients were participants of the Health Care Program, initiated by the King Hussein Cancer Foundation, as an insurance program to fight against cancer. With time, the number of patients increased and varied. The majority were cash payers who visited the clinic regularly for routine screening purposes—mainly for cancers of the breast, cervix, skin, testicles, prostate, and colon.

In addition to screening, women are taught how to perform a BSE (breast-self exam) and given cancer related booklets in simplified language to answer the most commonly asked questions. Advice is given by the physicians related to living healthy life styles that include: eating well-balanced diets that are low in fat content and rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables. Patients are also warned against the dangers of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, severe weight gain (obesity), and encouraging exercise. Women are screened for breast, cervical, colorectal and skin cancers (according to international guidelines). Men are screened for testicular, colorectal, prostate and skin cancers.
